Oversize / Overweight Permits – Idaho (ITRPS)

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) issues special permits for vehicles and loads exceeding legal size and weight limits through the Idaho Transportation Permits System (ITRPS).

Pilot / Escort Vehicles – Idaho

Pilot/Escort vehicles are required when specified on the permit or according to the Pilot/Escort Vehicle Travel and Vertical Clearance of Structures Map.

Key Requirements:

  • Vehicle Type: Passenger car, pickup, or authorized truck (max 16,000 lbs GVW). No trailers allowed.
  • Loads Over 16 Feet High: Must use a non-metallic height pole on the front of the lead pilot vehicle.
  • Oversize Load Sign: 12″ high × 5′ wide, black on yellow background with 8″ letters. Mounted on roof.
  • Warning Lights: Flashing/rotating amber lights (or single beacon) visible from all sides, always on during escort.
  • Required Equipment (must be carried):
    • 18″ STOP/SLOW paddle
    • 3 bi-directional reflective triangles
    • 5 lb. fire extinguisher (B/C rating)
    • ANSI Class 2/3 safety vest (Class 3 at night)
    • Two spare Oversize Load signs
    • Non-conductive height pole (when required)
    • Hard hat, flashlight, first aid kit
    • Two-way radio (reliable communication minimum ½ mile)

Additional Rules:

  • Front, rear, or advance pilot/escort may be required depending on load dimensions and route.
  • Maintain ~1,000 ft spacing in rural areas.
  • Headlights and taillights must be on.
  • Special provisions for first movement of tree-length logs (up to 110 ft).
