OREGON STATE PILOT CAR REGULATIONS

Pilot vehicle(s) — also called escorts — may be required on every highway in Oregon when moving oversize or over-dimension loads. Requirements are based on the load’s width, height, overall length, and front/rear overhang.
Key Requirements
- Pilot needs vary by highway and route. Refer to Route Map 2 for Green, Purple, and Red route designations on both multi-lane and two-lane highways. (See also the Route Map 2 Legend)
- Height Declarations are required in most cases:
- Certified Flaggers are often required for overwidth or overheight loads. When required, the Certified Flagger Attachment must accompany the permit.
- Rolling Stop Method (using three pilot vehicles) is allowed at approved locations. Pilot operators must be properly certified in this method.
Pilot Vehicle Equipment & Rules
- Legal-size passenger car, pickup, or truck (no towing allowed)
- “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign (minimum 5 ft wide x 10 inches high) mounted on the roof
- Amber flashing or strobe lights visible from all directions
