Transportation Permits (Oversize / Overweight Vehicles) – California

Caltrans issues special transportation permits for vehicles and loads that exceed standard size and weight limits on the State Highway System.

Permit Types

  • Single Trip Permit (I & II) – Loads over 8′-6″ wide, 14′-0″ high, or 80,000 lbs.
  • Annual Permit – Up to 12′-0″ wide, 14′-0″ high, 40′-0″ KPRA (Red routes prohibited)
  • Repetitive Permit – Up to 12′-0″ wide, 14′-6″ high, 90′-0″ long
  • Sea Container Permit – For port-area intermodal containers (specific axle & length limits)
  • Variance Permit – For loads over 15′-0″ wide, 17′-0″ high, or 135′-0″ long
  • Motorsport Permit – For vehicles attending ACCUS-sanctioned events
